We are going to have a lot of fun in third grade! This year is a big step as we start preparing to take the PSSA (the Pennsylvania state assessment) in the spring. We get to use a lot of fun tools to help us get ready!
Accelerated Reader is a computer-based program that students can earn points for the books that they read. If they reach their goal for each quarter, they can pick from a variety of rewards! Parents can monitor their students progress just by logging onto the site.
Study Island is another computer-based program that allows students to practice the skills they need to be successful in both reading and math. Students earn blue ribbons for completing quizzes and can access a game component to practice skills from home!
While we make sure that we are ready for the PSSA, we also include many activities to keep students excited about learning! One way that we daily practice our reading skills is through the Daily 5 technique. Students complete activities while reading to self, reading to someone, listening to reading, working with words, or working on writing skills. These activities allow the teacher to work one-on-one with students or with small reading groups on specific skills.
In addition to reading and math, this year we will learn about ecosystems, weather and climate, forces and magnets, and many other topics! We will learn how to write in cursive and will use ipads to publish our writing pieces, practice skills, and create screencasts.
Third grade is so exciting!!
