I am looking forward to a year filled with a variety of learning experiences for your child.  It is my hope that they will develop skills and strategies that will not only help them in 2nd grade but will also equip them to be lifelong learners. I am also passionate about providing the students with a safe and caring environment and fostering a caring attitude in them.

Students will be reading a variety of genre...realistic fiction, biographies, informational, poetry, fairy tales, etc. from a variety of sources such as anthologies, informational books, chapter books and magazines.  Students will meet with reading specialists and paraeducators as their needs are identified and met.
Our goal for your child is to become a more independent and self-reliant writer.  During writing time, the students will focus on different forms of writing such as letters, stories, poetry, etc.  Students will practice writing to inform, persuade, and share personal stories.

Spelling/Word Work
Spelling will be evaluated within the context of each child's written work as well as through weekly spelling tests.   Spelling may vary depending on the needs of the child.  The spelling lists will be related to the Wonders Reading Program.  Within the writing process, the students will have the opportunity to proofread, revise, and edit their own work.  Spelling, grammar, and mechanics skills will be taught as needed during the language arts block and during reading.
Each morning, the students will complete literacy board activities to help promote their word work skills and teach important mini-lessons for successful language growth.

We use the Everyday Math Curriculum. For 2nd grade we will focus on addition and subtraction facts.  Your student should have math facts homework throughout the week and they will take a  3 minute test on Fridays.
Important 2nd Grade math concepts are:
place value
2-digit addition and subtraction
measurement to the nearest inch and centimeter
telling time to the nearest 5 minutes
counting money and making change
2D and 3D shapes
solving word problems
       explaining their answers

Your student may have math home link homework some nights.

Students will be assessed during three marking periods throughout the school year. Students will be assessed in Reading, Writing, and Math using the following scores:

2 - Working Towards Benchmark
1 - Needs Improvement

Students will also be assessed in their work habits/social skills and progress within their Specials:
