November News:

The first graders have begun Unit 2 of the Wonders reading curriculum.  This unit will focus on making and confirming predictions and finding the story elements (setting, characters, problem and solution).    Students will also be finding the main idea and details of nonfiction stories.  They are also reading and writing their high frequency words and practicing patterned words for their spelling lists.

The students will begin Unit 4 this month in math.  This unit will focus on nonstandard units of measurement.  In class, they will be using paperclips, straws, toothpicks and pencils to measure.  We teach them to lay their units end to end with no gaps.  They will learn this cute poem to help them remember it.

To find the length of your desk or your friend,

Use the same unit from end to end!

Measurement will be a snap,

If you never gap or overlap.

We are continuing our Social Studies unit during our content block of the day.  The students will be voting on a first grade mascot the first week of November.  We will then begin learning about United States Symbols and Community Helpers.  We will end the month by studying the Pilgrims, Native Americans and how they came together at the First Thanksgiving.

We wish you all a wonderful beginning to the holiday season!  Gobble, Gobble, Gobble!!!!
