Mrs. Amy DeLaney

Spring has sprung and the flowers are blooming!  We are so excited to have warmer temperatures during recess.  It is always a good idea to keep a sweatshirt or light jacket in your child’s backpack.  The back playground can get very windy during recess.

The students are finishing up a content unit on Famous Americans.  We have been learning important information about the following Americans: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Hellen Keller, and Susan B. Anthony.  We will begin a two week unit on plants at the end of the month.

In reading, the students are focusing on nonfiction text features (table of contents, bold words, captions, pictures, index, glossary, etc).  While reading nonfiction books, focus on bolded vocabulary words.  Point out other text features that you may find.  Our fiction focus continues to be story elements.  Discuss the characters, setting, problem and solution of their homework books.  We will be sending home new module words in the middle of the month.  We will also begin to focus on Folktales and Fairytales at the end of the month.

In math, we are focusing on geometry.  The students learned the properties of polygons by building them with straws and twist ties.  We are now looking at shapes as a whole and dividing them into equal parts.
